The Jackson & Willan Cottages are on The Salvation Army’s West Campus in Calgary, Alberta. Built in 1986 as an orphanage, the cottages later served as seniors housing until 2014 and have been vacant since. The Salvation Army planned to repurpose them as transitional housing for women moving from shelters to permanent housing. Nearby are the Wagner Cottage, which operates as a 24/7 women’s emergency shelter, and The Barbara Mitchell Family Resource Centre, which will provide additional support services.
The project involves a full renovation of the interior and exterior of the two identical cottages. Exterior work includes a new wall assembly, cladding, and roofing, while the interior will retain some existing walls and add new ones.
The project pursued multiple funding sources, many of which require reduced energy use and carbon emissions. Exterior assembly options will help determine the achievable energy targets.
